How much does a notary cost in Indiana?
Most "notary cost" pages are run by an online-notarization platform or a notary supplier — each answering with its own product. This one isn't. Here's what it actually costs in Indiana, all your options compared fairly — including the one where your bank does it for free.
The two prices, separated
1 · The notarial fee
State-capped. This is the official act — verifying you, witnessing the signature, applying the stamp. It's the same amount whether you drive to the notary or they drive to you.
2 · The travel / convenience fee
Travel is billed separately from the notarial fee and is capped: per IC 33-42-14-1 the travel fee may not exceed the federal travel fees established by the U.S. General Services Administration; the SoS Notary Guide states a notary may charge no more than the current federal mileage rate (IRS standard mileage rate) for travel. Notaries must inform clients in advance of any service fees charged above the $10 per-notarization fee. It only applies when a notary comes to you — a bank or walk-in counter doesn't charge it.

Travel fees: Travel is billed separately from the notarial fee and is capped: per IC 33-42-14-1 the travel fee may not exceed the federal travel fees established by the U.S. General Services Administration; the SoS Notary Guide states a notary may charge no more than the current federal mileage rate (IRS standard mileage rate) for travel. Statute (IC 33-42-14-1) phrases the cap as '$10 per signature' for each listed act, while the official SoS Notary Guide restates it as '$10 per individual notarization' — both mean a $10 maximum per notarial act.
Fees for notarial acts not enumerated in IC 33-42-14-1 are negotiable (no statutory cap).
Fee-disclosure rule: if a fee is charged, the notary must display in advance a list of the fees they will charge, and must inform clients ahead of any service fees above the $10 per-notarization fee.
Public officials may not charge for notarial acts performed in connection with official business of their governmental unit.
RON adds a $25-per-act cap plus a reasonable fee for copies of electronic journal entries and audiovisual recordings; remote notaries must keep an electronic journal that lists every fee charged per remote act.
As of July 1, 2024 the word 'seal' is no longer required in the notary's seal/stamp.
Indiana requires a $25,000 surety bond (among the highest in the nation), which affects who offers mobile/RON service though it is not a per-act charge to signers.
Remote online notarization: RON · Live in-state — Remote online notarization is authorized and operational in Indiana. Notaries apply through the Indiana Secretary of State / INBiz for separate remote-notary authorization ($100 fee), must complete a remote-notary course and exam, and must use a state-approved remote technology vendor. RON fee is capped at $25 per remote notarial act (plus a reasonable fee for copies of electronic journal entries and audiovisual recordings). The remote notary must always be physically located in Indiana when performing a remote act; the signer (principal) may appear from another state, subject to IC 33-42-17-6.
